Jay Arehart, PhD
I am a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department. I teach courses about architectural design, sustainability, building science, structural engineering and sustainability. I am a strong believer in the value of experiential and project-based learning, and currently mentor the 2023 CU Boulder Solar Decathlon team.
My PhD investigated the carbon storage potential of materials and buildings at various temporal and geographic scales. My current research uses advanced life cycle assessment methods, machine learning, and principles of industrial ecology to reduce the carbon emissions of the built environment at both the building and city scales. You can see my recent publications on Google Scholar.
I am the co-chair of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Sustainability Committee helping the structural engineering profession decarbonize. Previously, I was a research fellow with Project Drawdown, visiting researcher at Edinburgh Napier University, and project manager with Engineers in Action.
Please get in touch if you are interested in discussing consultancies in the realms of embodied carbon, life cycle assessment, bio-based construction materials, generative design, or building stock scale analyses.
